In 2010, a team of researchers published a paper proposing that a volcano eruption did away with the
Neanderthals. The theory that the group proposed is that the Italian volcano at Campi Flegri in Naples,
Italy, spilt ashes as far away as Spain and caused radical environmental damage to which the Neanderthals
    could not adapt.

Humans presumably outlived the catastrophe because they were spread out from Africa to Asia. The
Neanderthals did not survive because they were few and living in Italy, Germany, and France. The
Neanderthals in Spain continued living for several thousand more years unaware that they were the last
    ones.

Of course, an obvious question is how the Woolly Mammoth, Aurochs, and other animals that Neanderthals
hunted managed to survive and outlive our cousins for 20 or 30,000 more years. An even more intriguing
question is how it is that peer reviewers didn't ask such questions and allow the volcano paper to be
    published.
