Why God Doesn't Exist
Create armies?

Will we organize armies again, perhaps using existing gangs as seed? Isn’t this how civilization
originated? Won’t history simply repeat itself? Sure! Some people will die. But the strong will prevail
and a new society of shoguns or freewheeling cowboys will emerge.

It is difficult to believe that this could happen. In the early days of civilization, the farmers were many and
the soldiers few. The full unemployment scenario is exactly in reverse.

Again, we should get used to the thought that it’s every man for himself. Who will you trust? The urban
family is collapsing as I write. We are losing sight of the traditional family and becoming individuals. This
is quite unlike the clans or tribes of the hunter-gatherers that served as seeds for the armies of the
incipient commercial farming phase. What is about to occur will be nothing like the extended families of
the agricultural age. We have become highly individualistic in the twilight of our species. Traditional family
bonds and friendships are disintegrating. Social relations have been replaced by business etiquette and
protocol. The rule is not your traditional Christian, socialistic, and equitable ‘do unto others as they would
do unto you.’ The rule is the more recent impersonal business law of the jungle: ‘the buyer beware.’ Each
individual should look out for his own interests because neglecting them is guaranteed to cost him his
life. In a situation where food is available only for one, the head of a gang should expect to fight for a
banana against his lifelong buddies. The hunter-gatherer that survives the longest in the upcoming
Holocaust is the one who watches his own back and takes care of number one. The last stage of a mass
extinction inevitably involves cannibalism. You will be looking over your shoulder to see who steals a
piece of bread (or of you) from you.

Sir? My gang... I mean, the Army
has ordered us to expropriate food
from all the farmers in this region.
Sure! I am the
only human in
the region and
I'm from the
city. This is
my last carrot.
We can
perhaps dice
it and have a
bite apiece.
